Words Worth Keeping

A collection of Hiberno-English, dialect, and linguistic curiosity. The words we use, where they came from, and what they say about us. Starting in the north of Ireland and wandering from there.

Word of the Moment
quare
/kwer/ - adj., adv.
Very, extremely, remarkably. A Hiberno-English intensifier derived from "queer" but stripped of its English meaning entirely. Used across Ulster and beyond as a universal amplifier of quality, quantity, or surprise.
"That's quare good, so it is." - That is very good indeed.
